If you build drones, autonomy, or the software that ties them together, Replicator is the DoD program you keep hearing about—and the one most misunderstood by founders. Here's what it is and how you actually get in.
Announced in 2023, Replicator is a Department of Defense initiative to field thousands of attritable, all-domain autonomous systems within an aggressive 18–24 month window. ‘Attritable’ means cheap enough to lose—the opposite of exquisite, decade-long platforms. The goal is mass, produced fast, from a resilient industrial base. DIU helps lead the effort, using its speed and commercial reach to move systems from selection to fielding.

Because Replicator moves in tranches, there is no single deadline—there is a rolling series of capability sets, each with its own solicitations, primes and timelines. That changes your strategy from ‘apply once’ to ‘stay positioned.’ The companies that win are usually already procurement-ready when a tranche opens: Blue UAS-cleared, with a manufacturable product and a government relationship in place. Getting cleared or teamed before the buy is announced is often the difference between catching a tranche and missing it.
